Colorado Man Loses $1.4 Million in Crypto-Romance Scam
A resident of Colorado has reportedly lost approximately $1.4 million after becoming a victim of a cryptocurrency romance scam that emptied his retirement funds. The individual chose to remain anonymous during his interview with Denver7 Investigates, appearing in silhouette and using a voice modulator to protect his identity. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently looking into the matter.
Trust Misplaced in Online Connection
Facing marital difficulties, the victim turned to a dating platform where he made a connection with someone. The conversation soon shifted to financial matters, with the individual suggesting they could assist him in investing in various cryptocurrencies. Believing they shared a romantic bond, he placed his trust in this person, despite never meeting in person; their interaction was limited to FaceTime calls. The woman, who identified herself as Erin, is suspected of using a fictitious name.
From Legitimate to Fraudulent Apps
Initially, the victim transferred money through recognized cryptocurrency applications. However, he later unknowingly redirected funds to a fraudulent app controlled by the scammers. In total, he lost a staggering $1.4 million. “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is,” he cautioned.
Largest Crypto Scam Case in Recent Memory
CBI Special Agent Zeb Smeester discussed the case with Denver7 Investigates, noting that this instance represents the highest financial loss he has encountered in a cryptocurrency scam. “The most significant financial losses in these cases tend to arise from investment frauds like this one,” he remarked. Investigating such cases can be straightforward, yet law enforcement often faces challenges as many offenders operate from abroad, shifting their focus primarily to recovering lost funds for victims. “Pursuing the criminals is complicated as many are located overseas, making it difficult to identify them,” he explained.
High-Risk Nature of Investment Scams
According to the Better Business Bureau’s 2024 Scam Tracker, investment scams, particularly those involving cryptocurrencies, rank among the most perilous types of fraud. Romance scams are listed third, but Meghan Conradt, Director of the Better Business Bureau Foundation, noted that these two categories frequently overlap. “Regrettably, we have observed a significant uptick in these cases in recent years,” Conradt stated.
Identifying Red Flags in Romance Scams
Smeester outlined several warning signs individuals should be aware of to avoid falling victim to romance scams: an inability to meet the person face-to-face, requests for urgent financial assistance, and unsolicited investment advice. Conradt highlighted that the prevalence of crypto scams is partly due to the industry’s lack of regulation, which means it doesn’t provide the same consumer protections that banks and credit card companies do for disputing transactions. “Many people lack knowledge about this area, which resembles a Wild West scenario where values can fluctuate wildly from day to day,” she explained.
Encouraging Victims to Speak Up
Both Conradt and Smeester emphasized that victims are often hesitant to publicly discuss their experiences due to feelings of shame. However, Conradt believes that sharing these stories can serve as educational tools to help others avoid similar pitfalls. “It’s important not to blame yourself, although that may be easier said than done. You were manipulated,” she noted. “This unfortunate scenario can happen to anyone, and there are resources available to assist you. We are committed to aiding in recovery if you’re ready to pursue those options.”

The investigation into the victim’s case remains ongoing, with Smeester expressing a cautious optimism regarding the potential for recovering the lost funds. “I’m not wealthy by any means; I’m just an ordinary worker. I hope that one day this situation improves, not just for me, but also for others who find themselves in similar circumstances,” the victim shared.
